For the past 19 years in November, four professional judges, some from Gevalia Kaffee™, have traveled to the Big Island to judge which estate Kona coffee is best. While 56 entered in 2005, generally over 70 estate growers compete each year. It’s difficult to finish in the top 3, even in the ‘honorable mention’ top 15 category, when the number and quality of the competitors grows each year. That’s why we’re so proud that every year, since 1998, one or more of Pele Plantations’ estates have brought home ribbons. All-in-all, we’ve scored 1 2 ribbons so far and two are for FIRST PLACE - 1998 BrocksenGate Estate and 2001 Pau Hana (Wood) Estate. The reasons for our success are clear - the care of the farmers, pickers, and very importantly our Central Processing mill and full sun drying decks. Processing is the single component common to all of our estates, a step that is critical to scoring at the top.
